Disney is famous, not only for breathtaking animation films but also in research. The so-called Disney Research Lab in the city of Pittsburgh in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania research on new interaction possibilities to revolutionize especially the experience in their parks, toys as well as everyday high-tech items such as smartphones and tablets. From the laboratories a sensational news comes now because the researchers have found a way to make touchscreens palpable and tangible, saying that it feels as if you touch something on smooth surfaces, such as a smartphone or tablet.

Disney Research: 3D touchscreen

There are already one or another research team that is working on 3D surfaces. Known to us but actually work with surfaces that deform to create a 3D effect. The new 3D touchscreen of Disney Research, however, is flat and smooth. To give the user the feeling as though he would touch a certain surface, the researchers use an algorithm to surface-specific electrical voltage to produce pretending our brain that we, for example, touching a grooved material.

3D smartphones Despite a smooth surface now possible

Ivan Poupyrev, head of Disney’s Interaction Group describes the method that the brain interprets the structures of surfaces by stretching the skin on the fingers and hands, and this voltage can be simulate strain. The brain will almost led the way as it would affect a particular surface. At the same time, the display is flat and smooth. A video of Disney Research shows and explains this new technology in the field of interaction with the 3D touch screen, despite smooth surfaces are now possible
